New Playing Kits 2012

They were a long time coming, but the new Garryowen playing kits finally arrived last week, and all 3 Garryowen teams wore them with pride in Gaelic Park last Sunday. Unfortunately the new kits, impressive as they were, did not help with results, as Garryowen suffered losses in both the men's football and the hurling.
The men's footballers were first out at 12 pm, and hey were at a disadvantage from the start, with only the bare 15 players on hand. It took a while for them to get into the match, and by half time Sinn Fein had amassed a handsome lead which they held onto until the end of the match. When they did get into the game, the players showed that they are a match for anyone, and it is just disappointing that the numbers have dropped so low coming into the crunch time of the year.

The hurlers were next out at 1:30pm in the league semi-final, and they were suffering even more than the footballers from a lack of numbers. With only 13 fit and able men prepared to start, it was up to a few of the footballers to stand in and help out. Unfortunately, Melbourne Shamrocks were well up for the match and proceeded to hammer home their numeric adavntage right form the off. There were some good individual dispalys all over the park from the Garryowen players, and everyone battled hard, but in the end the Shamrocks were too good for this patched together side.
That brings the hurling season to an end for 2012, but all players can now look back on a very successful season where they regained the Championship title and played some excellent hurling right through the year.
Congratulations to all!!

Hurling Champions 2012

Congratulations to the Garryowen Hurling team who recorded a very impressive win yesterday in the hurling championship final over Sinn Fein. The team produced a brilliant dispaly of hurling with plenty of commitment and skill to regain the championship honours after a gap of 3 years. Congratulations to all players involved on the day and to the management team who have worked hard all year.

Railway Cup Sunday 12th February

Garryowen followed up their International Rules win with a run out for some of our players in the Railway Cup hosted by Wolfe Tones at Gaelic Park on Sunday. In total there were 8 players from the Garryowen football squad involved as well as players form the Hurling and Ladies Football squads. The big win of the day was Munster winning the final of the Men's football against Connaught, where there were 7 Garryowen players involved in total, including 4 players on the winning Munster side. A special mention to Shane who starred in midfield against some very fancied oppenents, and also to Dermot who took some well taken scores in both Munster matches. Another mention to Rory, Pat and Padraig who starred in Connaught's win over Ulster and also contributed in the final against Munster.
A big thank you to the Wolfe Tones GAA Club for who did a great job of hosting the competition.

International Rules Friday 10th February

The Garryowen 2012 season got off to a great start this weekend with an International Rules match against the Lang Lang Aussie Rules club in Lang Lang on Friday evening. After an opening quarter where both sides took time to get used to the compromise rules, Garryowen really took control in the 2nd and 3rd quarters including scoring 2 well taken goals. In the 4th quarter Lang Lang came right back into the game with a goal of their own. However, Garryowen held out and ended the game with their first win of the season - and also their first 'silverware'. There were some big performances from the Garryowen players especially some of the new players. A big thank you to the Lang Lang club for hosting the match and making this a very memorable day out for the club.
