Garryowen's 50th Anniversary
This year Garryowen is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. On Saturday 22nd July we are having a dinner for this great milestone and we would like to invite players and supporters from past and present. The dinner includes a 3 course meal, drinks (Guinness, beer, wine and soft drinks) and live band at Merrimu Receptions near Chadstone. Tickets are $75 and are available now by contacting Alysha on 0404 283 615 or emailing the club. Everyone is welcome, invite friends and family - tables of ten are available.Mexican Night
Everyone is invited to join us after training on Wednesday March 22nd at Nachos Mexican Cantina for dinner from 8pm. The restaurant is right next to our training venue at 1650 Dandenong Rd, Oakleigh. This is a fundraising event for Garryowen as the club will receive a percentage of the profits from the night. So come and eat well and catch up with the teams.Garryowen in the Media
Garryowen players appeared on Channel 9's morning show The Today Show with members of other teams of the GAA to promote Gaelic Football and Hurling. For St. Patricks Day the weather segments were filmed live from Dan O'Connell's pub in Carlton. After showcasing the talents of young Irish Dancers, the focus was turned to Gaelic sports. First the Hurlers were given their 15 seconds of fame of showing their skills with the interesting 'fact' from Steven Jacobs (the weather guy) that in early versions of the game the players would play to the death. After the national forcasts the footballers then had their turn.Thankyou to all those who gave up their morning to promote their sport and Garryowen.
Upcoming Games
After the months break due to the Commonwealth Games, games will be back in full swing from April 2nd. Both the Women's and Men's football teams play on April 2nd at 12:30pm and 2pm respectively. Both teams are playing their first round of the Championship. The Hurlers will play their first round of the Championship on April 9th at 12:30pm.Previous Games - National Day
On National Day both the Women's Football team and the Hurlers played their first League games for the year. The Women played St.Kevins first thing in the morning and made a good start to their season with a convincing win. A few first gamers made good contributions to the team, in particular Eva Natsis from the half back line. Bourkey, Jess Harvey and Cath Lucas also played well rotating through the mid-field.The Hurlers played in the afternoon in increasing heat against the Melbourne Shamrocks. Garryowen made a good start in the first half with playing with the wind. Garryowen scored some great points from play in particular from Sean Ryan and Daragh O'Donovan who also got our first goal. Dessie O'Sullivan scored the second goal. Early in the second half the Shamrocks eroded the lead Garryowen took into half time and the boys battled hard to save the game. In the end it turned out to be the most thrilling game for the day with the result being a draw at 2-9 a piece.
