Upcoming Games - Knockout Competition

This Sunday we see all three teams in action at Gaelic Park in round 2 of the Knockout competition. The Hurlers start the day against the Melbourne Shamrocks at 12:30pm. The Men's Football team play Padraig Pearses at 2pm and then the Women's team take on Grace O'Malleys from 3:30pm. Come down and support the teams for a full day of Garryowen games.
The Men's Football and Women's Football teams will again compete on the 30th April against St.Kevins to try and secure their place in the Knockout finals on the 7th May. The Hurlers will also be looking forward to a finals place on the 7th after this weekend.
There will be no games on the Mother's Day weekend on 14th May.

Knockout Champions

Congratulations to the Women footballers and our Hurlers for winning their respective knockout finals. The Women's team defeated Sinn Fein convincingly in the winter conditions. Garryowen kicked with a strong wind in the first half to set up a large lead at half time. With the weather worsening in the second half, with hail falling at one stage, Sinn Fein were unable to fight back and Garryowen took the cup.

The Men's team came up against Pearses in the Men's Final. Unfortunately they could not reproduce the performance of a week earlier but challenged a stronger Pearses thoughout the game to fall short of a win. Congratulations to the Men's team for a great effort in the Knockout competition. Some very positive signs for the team.

The Hurlers showed that hard work and commitment to the team pays off with a great win over the Melbourne Shamrocks. The game was close with a point separating the sides at the half and Garryowen eventually winning by two points with a goal late in the second half. It was a fitting result for the guys and their coach Collins Connolly.

Previous Games - League

Only one weekend of games have been played in the last month with free weekends due to the Commonwealth Games, Grand Prix and Easter. The Hurlers were to play Sinn Fein, but instead played an Intra club match after Sinn Fein did not have the numbers.
Other games saw Sinn Fein defeat Padraig Pearses in the Women's Football and Padraig Pearses beat St.Kevins in the Men's Football. The Women's Team has got off to a great start to the League with 3 wins from 3 games. After a big win against St.Kevins on National Day (6-15 to 1-2), the team followed it up with a win over Padraig Pearses (4-9 to 0-0) after the Knockout competition. They then came up against their recent rivals Sinn Fein and again came out on top 1-12 to 0-3.

The Men's Team have put in some positive performances but have been hit my injuries and unavailabilities which have left the team short of players and experience each game putting the team on the back foot from the start. Losses to St.Kevins, Wolfe Tones and Sinn Fein has not been the best start to the season but it has given many of the first year players plenty of game experience and with many players set to return for the remainder of the season, the team and make the most of what is to come.

The Hurler's have had only the one game since the Knockout competition with a one point loss to the Melbourne Shamrocks. (4-5 to 2-12) It was close throughout the game and a late goal by Garryowen might have sealed it for the team, however the Shamrocks managed to get a couple of late overs to win. This was also Collins Connolly's final game with Garryowen. We wish him the best of luck back home and thank him for being a great club person for Garryowen.
